Computer Technology

Have you lost your Microsoft product key? What if Windows can no longer start due to a blue screen or other error, then you may need to reinstall the operating system. To do so, you must have access to a product key (CD Key). But if you can no longer find the product key, you would lose your Windows license.

With KeyFinder Plus you could easily retrieve product keys for Windows, Office, SQL Server, Exchange Server and Adobe Acrobat, even if you can't boot your computer into Windows! No other product can recover product keys from non-booting Windows installations.

This article explains how you can recover lost product keys (CD Key) from your local, remote or crashed computer especially when you need to reinstall Windows but can't find your product key.

1.Download and Install KeyFinder Plus

Click here to download the setup package of KeyFinder Plus and save it in a place that is easy to find, such as your PC desktop.
When the download is complete, double-click the download file to run the installation wizard. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

2.Register the Program (Optional)

1.Launch the KeyFinder Plus program.
2.Click the Enter Key button, this will bring up the registration dialog.
3.Enter your User name and registration code into this dialog and click OK.

Recover Lost Product Key

1.Launch the KeyFinder Plus program.
2.Click the Start Recovery button, it will bring up a drop-down menu that provides three recovery mode: From current system, From non-booting system and From remote computer.
3.Select one of the recovery mode from the drop-down menu.

Recover Product Key from Current System
This mode will scan your local PC for product keys. Quickly recover and display product keys for Windows, Office, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Reader, SQL Server, VMware Workstation, MS Exchange and and many other software products installed in your local machine.

Recover Product Key from Non-booting System
Can't boot into Windows? No problem. Simply connect your crashed or unbootable hard drive to a working computer. This mode allows you to recover product keys from unbootable Windows installations.

Recover Product Key from Remote Computer
This mode enables you to scan network computers and retrieve the product keys for software products installed on your remote network computers.

Follow these instructions if you need to find your computer's Media Access Control address (MAC address). It is the unique identifier of a network adapter.  The MAC address is a 6-digit hexadecimal number, which is normally written as a twelve character alphanumeric string with a colon (:) or other separating character after every second character:

Example of a MAC address:  00:00:00:a1:2b:cc

If you computer has more than one network adapter (for example, an ethernet adapter and a wireless adapter), it will have a different MAC address for each adapter.

To find the MAC address:

Windows Vista, Windows 7:

Click the Start button.
In the Run text box, type cmd.  This will open the command window.
At the command prompt, type ipconfig /all.
Copy down the "Physical Address" (aka the MAC address) from the "Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection" section.
Close the command prompt window.

Windows 2000, 2003, XP, NT:

Click Start > Run.
In the Run text box, type cmd and hit enter. A command prompt window should appear.
At the command prompt, type ipconfig /all.
Copy down the "Physical Address" from the "Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection" section.
Close the command prompt window.

Windows 95, 98 and earlier:

Click Start > Run. A command prompt window appears.
Type winipcfg.
Click OK.
Copy down the "Adapter Address" (the MAC address).
Close the command prompt window.

Macintosh OS 10.4 and higher:

From the Apple icon in the upper left-hand corner of the desktop, select System Preferences.
From the Internet & Wireless section, select Network.
From the AirPort menu, click Advanced.
At the bottom of the AirPort tab, the MAC address is listed as AirPort ID.  Copy down the twelve digit alphanumeric string.
To exit, click the Cancel button of the AirPort info, then click on the red button in the upper left corner of the Network window.

Macintosh OS (10.3.5):

These instructions may also work for some earlier OS.

From the Apple Menu at top left of the desktop, select System Preferences > Network.
Select Show: Built-in Ethernet in the pull down menu.
Click Ethernet.
Your adapter's MAC address is the characters in Ethernet ID.

Linux/Unix:

Finding the MAC address varies across the different Linux/Unix operating systems.  In many systems, the following command will return the MAC address:

ifconfig -a

If this does not work, please refer to the instruction manuals available from your particular operating system.

STRAIGHT THROUGH

Ethernet cables are the standard cable used for almost all purposes, and are often called "patch cables". It is highly recommend you duplicate the color order as shown on the picture. Note how the green pair is not side-by-side as are all the other pairs. This configuration allows for longer wire runs.

CROSSOVER CABLES

The purpose of a Crossover Ethernet cable is to directly connect one computer to another computer (or device) without going through a router, switch or hub.
